Mine where inexistent until 2 years ago, and since then they occur at about an interval of 2 months. I wouldn't mind them if there weren't accompanied by several simptoms, such partial lost of sight for a few minutes or numbness. What do you do in order to prevent them, besides drugs or visiting the doctor?

Hi there !!!
I have suffered from migrane headaches for years and know how debilitating they can be.
You should go to your doctor and get some tests done.
I would have them check your hormone levels
Check your thyroid
maybe even go to a good neurologist would be a great idea
I know you want answers that include something besides drugs or doctors but you should be sure you have a clean bill of health first thing, if that comes out ok, then I would go on to alternative remedies

For alternative remedies
I would first find out if you are allergic to any foods , drinks ect..
try to keep a diary of what you eat, and when you get a migrane you can see what you had that day, and when this repeats itself, you will have some notes to compare and see if it was something you ate

I take two bags of ice, one for the back of my neck , and one for the top of my head, I place my feet in water as hot as I can tolerate ( If you are diabetic do not do this)
and sit in a dark room for a while, when the water gets cold I place more hot water in the bucket.
You can also take a panty hose and fill it with some tabacoo ( from a cigar) put some eucalyptus essential oil on it, lavender essential oil on the tabacco leaves and wrap it around your forehead
Have someone give you a cranial massage, or do it yourself, Take your fingers and massage in an upward motion, towards the top of your head, an indian doctor taught me this in seattle, and I love him for the great results I have found with this
You can also have someone massage your shoulders which get rock hard with tension, and massage your feet
You can drink strong black coffee
Breathe deeply and relax as much as you can
I have tried to do meditation, and disconnect myself from the intense pain.
Bio- feedback is wonderful also, worth giving it a try
Look at your diet, we are what we eat, many times we begin to gradually change our diet, and it has such an impact on us, yet we fail to realize the changes we have made are making us sick !!!
Drink a lot of water, migranes can happen to us if we are dehydrated.
Avoid stressful situations, ( I know it is hard) and when stressful situations arise, remember that by worrying ourselves to death we resolve nothing, and that we are in control of how we allow others to make us feel
I learned a long time ago also that many times we get migranes when we bottle up our emotions, or have feelings of guilt, Louise L. Hay has a wonderful book, " You can heal your life", and " the power is within", read them, they can help you a lot, they helped me more than I could ever express
Migranes are very debilitating, you may find relief in a number of new medications out in the market, many are non-narcotic, go to a doctor and let him know how you feel and he will see what can work out for you,
As much as I love to beat the migranes without pills, the reality is that many times we have to take some form of medication to tame the wild beast of migrane headaches, and it is not good to wait to the last minute , when you are in a fetal position crying in pain, to go to the hospital. Why put yourself through such misery and pain ?
Wishing you a healthy life , pain free
may you find relief
Love light and peace

Migraines aren't "just headaches." Migraine is a genetic neurological disease. It's a disease just as much as diabetes, thyroid disease, or epilepsy. There are some "natural" substances that work as preventives for some people -- magnesium, Coenzyme Q10, butterbur, Vitamin B2, feverfew. Still, even such natural substances act as drugs in our bodies, and it's important to discuss taking them with your doctor. With the two-month interval you have, most doctors wouldn't necessarily recommend preventives.

What do you take when you get a migraine? Over-the-counter or prescription pain medications can't truly stop the migraine; they only mask the pain for a few hours. There are prescription drugs that actually work in the brain to stop the migraine process, thus stopping the symptoms. The most widely used migraine abortives are the triptan medications such as Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, etc. For some of us who get the migraine aura (which your partial loss of sight may be), taking these meds as soon as we know it's starting actually keeps us from having the headache that can be one symptom of a migraine attack. There are now 7 drugs of this type available. Why not talk to your doctor? It's so worth it to be able to really stop a migraine in its tracks.

I've had migraines since I was six and know what hell they can be. Good luck to you!

In order to get rid of migraines you have to take pain medication try taking alieve and Motrin. Consult your physician he probably can give you some medication. If you are in pain don't avoid visiting the Doctor that's what he/she is there for to help people. Plus it might not be migraine if it is occupied with numbness. Consult a physician. I wish you the best of luck

I have had them since I was 13. They were beginning to interfere with my being able to take care of my house and my son while my husband was on the road. (he drives an 18 wheeler).
I eventually had to go to a Dr. I tried a couple of different meds for the pain, but I was having them too frequently. The Dr. gave me Topamax. I take it once a day and it has been an absolute lifesaver. I have been on it for 4 months and I have had only 2 "breakthrough" migraines.

Try to avoid whatever your triggers are. Axert is a great drug. Mine became so severe that I ended up taking an anti-seizure med to control them.
Learn what your triggers are and avoid them if you can. When you do get a migraine, then you will need a very good medication.

i get migraines 2-5 times a week. yes, a week. its been going on for about 4 months. Ive been in and out of the doctors office numerous times, had an MRI, blood tests.. you name it.. they've done it... but i still have migraines. it interferes with my school work and social life, but Ive learned how to somewhat deal with them. i always carry sunglasses with me. people may think you re a little weird, but for me, I'm way sensitive to light. my friend also gets migraines alot. her and i talked about when i had a one. she said what helped her was ask people to just pray for her, when she knew someone was praying for her, her migraines seemed to get better. Ive tried this before, i don't know where you are with your religion, but Ive memorized a verse from the bible that is very important to me. i close my eyes and repeat it several times.. your migraine has no control of your, its not part of you. when you do get one, just say that to yourself. i know, its weird, but it works for me! and trust me, Ive tried EVERYTHING! also, if you start to get one, at times i get a bag of ice and a towel and rap it up then stick it on my head, turn all the lights off and try to sleep. usually sleep is the only way to get rid of them.
good luck!
