I'm gonna be the mean one of the bunch and say no. But I do think CHILDREN should have free health care, and very very ill people. Too many people would abuse free health care...more than the amount that does now. Seriously, I worked in the ER, and I can't tell you how many people will had come in and ask for drugs by name JUST so they could abuse them or sell them. So, no, free health care is a bad idea. It's good in principle, but bad in practice.

Everyone on the planet should have free health care. Everyone should also have free food to eat, free shelter, free clothing, and free transportation. There also shouldn't be any rape, murder, robbery, assault, child abuse, or war.

Everyone should make the same wage, regardless of how productive they are, or what contributions they make to society. Rich people are evil; they got rich because they took advantage of the poor, and less fortunate. Corporations are the creations of the rich, and exist simply to oppress people.

If the government took over everything, especially health care, the world would be PERFECT.

Do you see where I am going with this? Nanny-state-ism (also known as Marxism) doesn't work because we live in REALITY. If you got everything for free, you would never work (I know I wouldn't) and who would be left to provide all the necessities of a modern society? If there was a way to provide free health care to every American, without reducing the quality of it, and without raising taxes, I'd be all for it. But there isn't.

You have to contribute into the system if you wish to reap the rewards from it.

It's a great idea, but not really feasible. Honestly, those who work hard and can't afford insurance need some help getting that coverage, but I'm a little tired of paying for the "free" health care that already exists. Trust me, there are a ton of girls who go out and get themselves pregnant and you, the actualy working taxpayer, gets to foot the bill for their OB care and the kid's care too. People who work and those who absolutely cannot need help getting health care at a sane price, not everyone should just get it for no reason. At the end of the day, hospitals have to turn a profit and that's just life.

Only if you believe in Socialism/Communism. There isn't anything in the Constitution about the right to free health care. Besides, there is free health care for the poor, just not the middle class. That is why the emergency rooms are always filled up. Especially if you are an illegal from Mexico. I would rather pay for it and have the power to pick my doctor and also have the very best of care, because I paid for it and not just the minimum of care that Socialism/Communism provides at best.

Nothing is free. Hospitals, medicine and doctors would have to be paid by our tax dollars. Their costs have unrealistically skyrocketed out of control, and have bankrupted many working Americans. Aspirin does not cost $5.50, like hospitals charge. Pharmacutical companies don't need to make billions on the back of the USA. Doctors should be well paid, but realistically so. The free care for "illegal immigrants" needs to cease. They should pay, just as most Americans do. If they don't have the money, they should make payments the rest of their lives, just as we do. We should be compassionate as a nation, and see that our children and elderly have adequate medical care. If we could get the politicans out of the lobbyists pockets, action could be taken to get medical care in line with what the real costs should be, and more people could afford health care. However, I would rather my tax dollars be spent on American's educational and health care costs than the Iraqi war and huge kickbacks to oil companies, bridges to nowhere, etc.

Right now, primarily business pays for health care in the US.

Coverage is very inequitable and the inequity results in a great deal of prevetable deaths & illnesses. People lose their job & they are SOL for coverage.

It doesn't have to be an exact copy of the existing systems such as Canada for it to be an improvement over what we have now. The infant mortality rate in the US is #27 in the world ; IMHPOV this is a national disgrace .

Could there be a minimum that all citizens get, at least, so that certain basics are at least part of the government's contribution to a healthier workforce & a relief from the burden on US business ?

Just something to think about.

nothing is free!

in UK, people pay for health care through their taxes. Result is mediocre system and long waits for simple procedures (what an economist would call "non-economic rationing").

on the plus side: if you should suffer some catastrophic illness or injury, you aren't going to lose your house over it.

Guess the answer to this question depends on whether you are in good health and/or have access to good insurance, or not....I have some problems with the "money talks" system we have now, but sure wouldn't want to replace it with UK system. Maybe a "single payer" instead of "single provider" would work.

and btw....why would you limit it to American citizens...what would you do, make everybody show the ambulance driver their passport or birth certificate? What about the tax-paying aliens that live here?

Absolutely not! No way!

What should be done is to put regulations in place to guarantee that no insurance company official or employee can receive more than $75000 in salary, compensation, perks, bonuses and other compansation including "co-lateral benifits", such as speaking engagements, etc.

Then, make a law that any excess the company makes over costs will be returned to consumers in the form of reduced rates during the very next year.

Of course, this will never happen, because the insurance sector makes large campaign contributions to BOTH parties, and hands out perks to officials of the government through lobbying, another "crooked, but legal" form of buying officials.

Yes, that would be the right thin to do and be a big relief for many people, too. It's a shame that citizen of a so called Super Power maybe have to die, because they can't affort helathcare.

Why can it not be mandatory for everybody to have a certain percentage of his/her salary taken out to finance such kind of health care system. Health care costs should be part of the taxable salary. The system should provide health care to every person who is legal in the US and not excluding any person.

When there still would remain problems financing it, the US maybe should think about the millions of dollars paid to other countries. One in particular. The American Govt. should take care of their own citizen first.

If every American had free health care who would pay for it? The government can't just print money so it would come from the taxes we pay and therefore wouldn't be free. It would just be insurance paid for with out taxes.
