I think they used to be made of marble back in the day, and the name just kind of stuck with them.

because they have a pretty pattern that maybe looks a bit like marble to some ppl especially the person who named it or maybe ........ mmmmmm ...... i havent gt a clue :)

couldn't think of any other name, so they just called them marbles, i kept asking myslef the same question@!!!!
and why did they call quinea pigs quinea pigs???? there are so many wierd things in english, i can't think of them all right now thou
