The core 2 duo is better in every respect. It's a whole new design family. It runs cooler, runs faster and can share all of it's cache. It supports hardware virtualization. (I'm not sure if that's good yet :)
The cheapest one in the bunch (e6300) is faster than anything that existed before and it sells for $189. I bought the E6600 here for $269 http://microcenter.com/byos/byos_single_product_results.phtml?product_id=253108
PS: The Pentium-D is usually the one refered to by dual-core

Basically Intel had a processor that they called Intel Core, the replacement is it's Intel Core 2. Core 2 processors come in Duo (dual-core) and Solo (single-core) and the high end Quad (quad-core).
When you hear Core 2 Duo it refers to the Core 2 dual-core as opposed to Core 2 Solo which would refer to a Core 2 single core processor.

"Dual-Core" is a generic term which applies to the technology, not a specific model of processor.
Dual-core refers to a CPU that includes two complete execution cores per physical processor. It has combined two processors and their caches and cache controllers onto a single integrated circuit (silicon chip). Dual-core processors are well-suited for multitasking environments because there are two complete execution cores instead of one, each with an independent interface to the frontside bus. Since each core has its own cache, the operating system has sufficient resources to handle most compute intensive tasks in parallel.
Multi-core is similar to dual-core in that it is an expansion to the dual-core technology which allows for more than two separate processors
The Core 2 Duo is the latest dual-core processor, and it's the best on the market. It's about 20% faster than the AMD X2 line, and it costs less! Definitely king of the hill for now...
