Most countries allow it, and most states also allow it, but there is one important thing to remember, the police's laser/radar gun will detect you before your dector will get them, I have bought many in the past 10 years and it only warns you that there is a police around, but doesn't stop you from going too fast thru a radar trap.

However in some states it is illegal to have you line of sight blocked, so putting a radar detector on your windshield is illegal. However there are ways around that and cops will not pull you over solely for that reason. For example, I mount my radar detector very high above my rear view cause it is barely visible to those not in the car. Also it is barely visible to the cop if he were to lean in my car and look at me while giving me a ticket.
