Because it is not the same as falling over and cutting yourself.
If a child falls we kiss it better put and bandaid on it and they run off to play prehaps with a limp but it's still all good. It's physical injury it is easy to over come.
But when it is verbal it cuts deeper into the heart and the mind. No bandaid can go in there to patch it up.
It is confussing for children to have such words spat at them. Every negative word thrown at a child needs ten good ones to to block out the bad.
Their feelings are not little just because they are they probably have bigger feelings then we adults do as they are not trying to block them, hide them or push them out.
They are not equipt with the ability to block out negative things that hurt their feelings so it hurts them more then a fall.

That's an easy one: children are being molded and they haven't been hardened as one does when they get older and experience more of the bad stuff. Hard, thoughtless words can cut like a knife and hurt the feelings of children and even some adults like me (I have always been very sensitive).
