a Century is 100 years. So for something to be "mid century" it would occur towards the middle of the particular century in question. The term can be used in a broad sense, covering many years in the century, but is commonly used to describe between the 40's and the 60's.

Partner is a term used to describe a relationship mate and describes their other half in general terms ,and gender is open to interpretation. Partner can be used as a non sexist term. She may feel easier saying her partner rather than shock others by stating which gender she is in relationship with. Some couple straight couples use this same term "partner" so that they both feel they are equals in the marriage. Your friend has probably received bad or rude comments when or if she said relationship is with another girl. And by saying partner it is her private life she is keeping private.
