I have a little bracelet with rainbow colored beads that my aunt got for me, and I love it. But I was about to go job hunting today while wearing it and my mother told me not to because the employer might get the 'wrong idea' about me.

Just out of curiosity, would rainbow jewelry or any sort of trigger that maybe made you wonder as to what a person's sexual orientation be have any influence on whether or not you hired the person? If so, why?

As a person who does some hiring, I can tell you that the only thing I would say about the bracelet (or any other jewelry) is that is it not allowed on the production lines. No one at my company cares if you're gay, straight, bi or asexual - it just matters how well you perform your job!

I just lost a job offer for being a transsexual so yes, discrimination still happens. It's generally a good idea to minimize jewelry when going to a job interview. The only jewelry I visibly wear is my earrings and a religious necklace.

Unfortunately, it might have some influence. It's not right, and it's not fair, but it's the way things are nowadays. Remove the bracelet for the interview and stuff. Once you are hired and working regularly, feel free to sport your colors. They can't fire you for wearing a frigging bracelet as long as you aren't harrassing anyone, there's nothing wrong with it.

It might influence someone who is gay supportive to hire you over someone as qualified who didn't have the bracelet on.

Then again it might influence some pig headed homophobes not to hire you because you have it on.

I wouldn't wear it on an interview and let them make their choice on you not on a perceived identification.
