I'm in the process of introducing the sippy cup to my 9 month old son. He seems to not really object to it, but ends up playing with it rather than drinking from it. I'm trying to replace one bottle a day (usually at lunch) with a sippy cup. He loves his bottle and knows also that the sippy cup contains his milk, but he usually drinks for a second on the cup and then starts biting and playing with it. He eats baby food and diced fruits, veggies, and meats and some cheese no problem. I'm not going to push the cup on him and just completely take away his bottles at this point, but I don't want him to be 2 and still drinking from a bottle. My mom did that with me and I had dental problems because of it. I want him to weaned by a reasonable age though. What can I do to help him be completely weaned by 12-15 months old?

He's never gone to bed with a bottle either. I have a friend who did that one too and her child's teeth got all grey and had to be pulled.

Just stick with it. Always give him the sippy when he wants/needs something to drink. If you think he's not getting enough to drink then give him the bottle.
He will play with the sippy cup for a while. It's new and different. He will bite it. It's all exploration for him. Your doing great; just keep it up. Don't give in and he will be off sooner than you think.

All three of my boys were off the bottle completely before there 1st birthday. By 9 months they just used one before bed.

I went through the same thing you are going through but earlier; I started my son on a sippy cup once a day at about 6 months. He was having a half bottle after meals, and a full bottle in the afternoon, so I started wtih that feeding. He would be nice and hungry after his nap and ready for his 8 oz. bottle, but I would give it to him in the sippy. THE FIRST COUPLE WEEKS, START OUT WITH NO VALVE IN THE SIPPY. Then after he gets the idea, I mean daily after a few sips without it, put the valve back in. At first if he took even a few sips from teh sippy I counted it as a win, and transfered the rest to a bottle. AFter a week of that I said, OK, you have the idea, no more bottle at this time, period. And if he took a sip and then started to play with it, I put him on the ground to play and took the cup away. Then I would come back and try again 20 minutes later. the hungrier he got the more sips he would take. I would NOT give up till that cup was gone, even if it took till his normal dinner time. Now he's 8 months old and he only has a bottle at bedtime now. He uses a sippy at meals and sucks that baby dry at his post-nap feeding. Hang in there!

I would not worry so much about the bottle being taken away. As long as you feed your baby his milk while holding him and then the bottle gets put away he will be fine. You get the dental problems when they go to bed with them and when they carry them around all day. My were 18m and 2 when I took them away, but I always held them when they had their bottle. I enjoyed that time with them and cherished it because before you know it, it will be gone.
I would introduce the cup but don't replace it for the bottle now. Formula is very important to them now. He will eventually get used to the cup and it will take over the bottle. They are only babies once, just enjoy the time with them while you give them the bottle.

give him his juice in his sippy cup, and his milk in his bottles.. getting him off the bottle wont happen over night.. i have 3 boys and all 3 were off the bottle by the age of 10 months.. its not easy bc he expects them to be there.. be patient with him.. also dont let him go to bed with a bottle.. ( i know it sounds impossible but it can be done) if he goes to bed with a bottle, it can cause his teeth to go bad faster and he can have dental problems in the future..
when i got my kids off the bottle i would give them one in the morn, and one at night, and thru the day they would use the sippy cup.. if you get into this routine he will get use to it.. takes time and alot of patience..

I don't have kids, but I think you were doing fine by giving it to him once a day. just keep doing that, and then try gradually replacing his bottles with his sippy cup. he'll eventually get used to it.

Keep what you are doing let him play with it just remember he is only 9 months. Keep introducing him to it and it is ok for him to play and bit it that is his way of getting used to it. I did this with my 2 year old daughter and it does work just give it time. Good Luck
