They have a Dummies Guide to Playing Guitar...$30, but it actually shows you riffs and chords and how to play some good stuff. It's a comprehensive guide to all things guitar, including styles, types of guitars, masters of the instrument, etc. Very in-depth, great tips for playing and also helps making you sound knowledgable around other guitar players. It's probably the cheapest way to go. Aside from that, I would look for a beginner's guide to guitar, usually found in music stores by various companies for about $10. They will teach you the fundamentals of music but not much about the actual guitar.

learn how to read guitar tabs, ask someone who knows how, or learn online. just google "how to read guitar tabs" and something will come up.
then go to www.ultimate-guitar.com and find a song you think will be easy. then just practice! you can even find lessons on this website.
just keep at it and you'll get better, i taught myself how to play as well, i've been playing about 3 years now and im pretty good by my standards! i can play most of the songs i want and have fun playing, which is the important thing :)

My two sons taught theirselves to play by buying the books to teach theirselves. You can also take guitar lessons which would cost more money.

Go to the local guitar store and see if anyone is offering lessons, or there are fliers up for lessons.
