Darker colors work much better than lighter ones. I am in the patio furniture business. Black is the most popular umbrella color, but people assume it is the hottest. The reality is it blocks out slightly more UV than a lighter umbrella. Generally speaking you have to be in the Islands in summer to realize the temperature difference. So the moral is get whatever color you want as long as it is not a mesh fabric.

White reflects the sun and black will absorb but you must also consider the transparency of the material. A thin material could allow the light and heat to come through. Best of all would be a silvery foil type material like a space blanket that would reflect most of the light and not let any light through.

is this an umbrella that sits over a picnic table? depending on your location and how hot it gets, white will reflect, and keep cooler, but will need to be washed more frequently.
