when we talk to people face to face, our interraction is on a lot of different levels. Besides the words we use, there are our facial expressions, our body language, and of course, our ability to make certain vocal noises that give the other person a sense of our state of mind.... happy, sad, angry, etc. etc.
One of the fascinating things about this still fairly new medium of human communication, is that we have to find ways to replace what we can't do, and one of them is to replace the old fashioned physical expression of humor, pleasantness, friendliness, and lightheartnedness that we normally express with a little chuckle, or big laugh, with the simple written abbreviation LOL (laugh out loud). The person at the other end sees that you are speaking lightheartedly. That way, if there COULD ;possibly be two ways that other person might take what you said, you want him or her to be sure that it is the friendliest and most pleasant definition you want them to interpret.
