I think it's very individual. Some people worship Krishna, or Buddha, or Jesus, through forcing their minds to be still by way of meditation. Some seek to calm their minds or create positive energy through prescribed prayers or mantras. Some ask for worldly things. Some ask for truth. Some wait patiently for guidance. Some practice good deeds or attentiveness. On the whole, Christians usually seem to believe in asking for forgiveness, Buddhists in meditating to free themselves from attachment, and Hindus in meditating on ideas to free themselves from the illusion of matter, but you would know the Hindu way better than I. Each one seems to have a way it can lead you into illusion or truth, depending on what path you take and if that path builds or strips off the right or wrong things in you. Many Buddhists say there is no God, only the Atman, so that can be a huge difference - but whatever you think God, or Atman, or Jesus means will eventually have to be discarded to know the truth anyway.
