Go to a library and check out a book on Italian Costumes. Also decide on your period what Italians war today is a lot like what we wear today bot the Romans were different from the Medieval Italians were different from the Renaissance. The, if you want to spend some money go to places like http://www.renstore.com/ and see what they have.

Good luck

Way back when isn't that clear. You could make a toga out of a bedsheet since Ancient Rome was in Italy way back when.

You might be talking about the Renaissance. Here is a webpage that has portraits of Italian women in the 16th century.

You can also browse for other sites that have patterns and stuff if you're going to sew a dress.
