They now do and there's also a small wild population on the Gir peninsula in India.
They used to occur an many parts of Europe and Asia and it's therefore erroneous to refer to them as "african" lions as a previous answerer did. The common English name is lion. Period.
They dont occur in all African regions, though. They won't venture into the deep Sahara, although they do occur in parts of the Kalahari and Namib deserts, and, contrary to popular belief, neither will you find them in dense forest.

mountain lions also called cougars and puma are their smaller relatives and can be found in both south and north America

Yes , but mainly they are in Wildlive reserves. There are very few roaming packs anymore. They are mostly contained.
