My computer has been setup to receive automatic updates. Because of this my Internet Explorer was updated to 7. Since then, upon restarting, IE7 automatically starts and goes to to http://iesettingsupdate, which is actually a blank page. However, if I close it down and start IE7 again I am able to browse, but it eventually freeze and crashes.

Some months ago Norton Antivirus was removed from my computer; I mention this, because by reading some replies to previous questions, I've learned that this could be a reason for the problem.

If the problem is indeed due to fragments of Norton on my computer, how do I find out and how can I remove it? Also, how would I reinstall either IE7 or 6 without causing further problems?

FYI... currently I have Avant Browser, Mozilla Firefox, and MSN Explorer loaded on my computer, and I'm not really thrilled with any of them.

Thanks!

This link tells you how to re-install IE 6 on your computer.

And to make sure Norton is totally removed you may to go into the program file and physically remove the folders themselves. I am assuming you uninstalled through add remove programs. I had to do this with a McAffee product a few months ago. I was a huge pain and took a while but it worked. Here is one website that deals with compleatly uninstalling Norton.

IE7 is a good thing regardless of what you hear on the net. Do NOT try to revert back to IE6. Norton is traditionally a pain to completely remove. Search their support area and forums for utilities to completely remove. Its never fun with Norton.

You may have a 'runonce' stuck in your registry. Do 2 things:

1. download the free winpatrol from below. Once installed, look in the tab called 'startup'. Disable (not delete) anything that you dont want to start on its own. Make sure you know what you are disabling by reviewing the process library at http://www.liutilities.com

2. Once you finally navigate to the homepage you want, open the tools > internet options. On the homepage area, click on the button 'use current'. Click OK

You should be fine at this point. Win Patrol is an EXCELLENT utility with no spy or spam. It will also alert you if something tries to change your home page. BTW, You must be admin to install.

A GREAT free replacement is Avast from below.

It sounds like you have spyware/adware tied into IE7.

I would recommend downloading a program called HiJackThis: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

And doing a scan, then removing everything that you're not familiar with. Anything that you don't know should not be there. There will not be any serious negative effects of doing this, as it's simply removing software that has been 'added' to your machine.

It is very unlikely Norton has anything to do with it, as it does not tie into IE7.

Reinstalling IE6/7 should not cause any further problems, you can do that safely. However by the sounds of it, it won't solve your problem either.

Feel free to message me if you need more help,
Ken
