Well it sounds to me like you should take her shopping and buy her the best machine you can afford along with some roses to thank her for being so thoughtful as to make you PJ's by hand ;-)

It's pretty difficult to break a sewing machine. It doesn't however, take much lint inside the works to keep it from operating properly. Also, if the end of the needle has even a small barb on it, it too, will mess things up.
Clean the machine, change the needle, and more than likely it will work properly.
Oh, and one more thing. Learn to sew, and make your own PJ's.
