In viewing the movies: "From Hell" and " Letters from Hell" reading and researching Jack the Ripper, there is a number of plausible theories of the identity and the motive of Jack the Ripper. What have you heard and what are your general opinions/beliefs of the Jack the Ripper Murders that plagued Whitechapel London in 1888?

"Jack the Ripper" was a serial killer who killed five prostitutes in London in the late 1800s. The case was never solved. Many theories exist- some think he could have been a doctor since some of the bodies seemed disected. Other creative notions were that he was really a she (unlikely), or that he was in fact a Queen Victoria's screwball nephew (a fun theory, but he had an alabi so he's off the hook). Some of the more wacky theories pin the crime on Lewis "Alice in Wonderland" Carol and Joseph "The Elephant Man" Merrick. I'm surprised no one dragged the tooth fairy into this.
An article I read by an fbi profiler suggested that, whomever he was, he was likely sone fringe of society thug with a chip on his shoulder against women who got a thrill out of killing and mutilating them. Nobody famous. Just riff-raff with a vicious streak.
I've included some links- but it's taken me so long to type this I'm sure someone's beat me to them.

I agree with your man above.

As the crimes went unsolved an awful lot of rubbish and myth has grown up around Jack the Ripper. (Like the "fact" that the murderer had to have had medical training - nonsense, his victims were indeed "ripped")

It is a far more seductive thought that someone famous carried out the murders - in the same way we cannot accept the fact that Princess Diana died because her driver was pissed and crashed the car - it is more satisfying to build up a conspiracy around the unknown.

Regretfully, the truth is likely to be far more prosaic and that the murders were carried out by a nobody who lived local to the area.

They were certainly the Crime of THAT century (the 19th century).

From Hell is a great movie, but lousy history. There are much better books around about the case, or start with http://www.casebook.org

Whatever you do don't fall into the Patricia Cornwell trap--her book is terrible.
