The terrible towel was created by Myron Cope in the 70's. He was a broadcaster (and is a legend) for the Steelers for many years. The story goes that his bosses at WTAE radio in Pittsburgh asked him to come up with a gimmick, something that everyone had or could easily and cheaply come by. Myron told his bosses that he wasnt a "gimmick guy", to which his bosses reply was to remind him that his contract was up after that season. Myron said" OK, Im a gimmick guy". The towelwas the gimmick they came up with, and it works because it has two distinct qualities; sound, and color. It looks really cool when 65 thousand people are waving them at a game.

hey its called a terrible towel because an old sportscaster named myron cope who for years and years broadcasted the games on a radio station called wtae and he had to come up with some kind of fad or catch phrase thing that was something everyone in the city had access to (if you've never been to pgh you won't understand we take our football seriously and we love our men no matter what even if they quit and walk out like my chin man boo hoo )pgh is mostly a middle class city with both extreames just like every other city and thats how it started it was a inexpensive easily accessable item everyone could get if they didn't have one already and a little more history my parents owned a golf course and sportinggoods store during this time and we usto print and sell all kinds of terrible towels i still have one that was made for golf bags ( a golf towel terrible towel)my parents also hosted for years the west hill parade of pros which was a contest between professional golfers and past and (than)present steelers all the money that was raised went to the atusim society and the broadcaster first mentioned myron cope had a son who had atusim ,the contest was to see who could hit a golf ball furthest over the alleghany (or it might have been the ohio ) river and it was lots of fun at one of these functions i punched lee travino (i was about 6) and he told me if i gave him a kiss i could have a terrible towel, well the dang towels were made and sold in my dads store and at 6 i had no idea who lee travino was when he asked for the kiss i was just doing what my parents told me to do if a stranger said something like that so i punched and ran yelling for daddy this whole thing was caught on tape by the channel 4 wtae (at least than it was like 74 or 75 bradshaw and swan days)and i was teased by my siblings and my cousins for so long after ward hows that for history ...........

The Steelers fans wave the yellow towel, when they do it synchronized it looks pretty cool. They just call them Terrible Towels because it might intimidate the opponents who visit them.

Steelers each and each of ways and function been that way for me for a protracted time. i do no longer care in the event that they bypass 15-a million or a million-15, they'll continuously be my widespread team. Pitttsburgh followers are the final followers interior the NFL and that they stick to their team no count number the place they play and that broadcasts alot. i understand they have lost alot of great gamers with the aid of the years with the aid of fact Rooney does not seem to need to pay out the huge greenbacks yet they continuously seem to stay aggressive. final 12 months grew to become right into a bad 12 months and this 12 months would be a great ask your self, distinctly to those doubters who did no longer understand why Rooney chosen Tomlin over Whiz and Grimm ( i in my opinion needed Whiz myself). the hunt for 6 starts off in '07!!!!

its actually from the late eighties. the towels were actually white and they were used by the steelers to surrender. only afterwards they turned that yellow color from their fan's tears.
