Good question. Did you know that it has been proven that if you legalize it, it sells even less then before (after the thrill of it being legal passes) and therefor, less drugs? That's what they eventually had to do in Mexico because things got so bad.
Did you also know that as far as brain-cell damage, smoking a joint has the same effect as smoking 5 cigarettes (or so I read) and most people that smoke cigarrettes smoke more than a pack a day.
So what's the big deal with pot? I agree, legalize it.

I think it's still illegal because of faulty reasoning. By that I mean the belief that use of pot will lead to the use of "hard" drugs. The problem with that reasoning is that most drug users probably did smoke pot before they used other drugs, but the logical connection between pot use and other drug use is missing. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Hard drug users probably did use pot in the beginning, but that doesn't mean pot LED to the use of hard drugs. However, you should recognize the possession of marijuana in most states is an extremely minor offense. In my state, possession of less than 6 ounces is less than a speeding ticket. I think it's interesting you mention health damage. Where are the studies that show pot causes lung cancer, for example? Don't you think if such studies existed the feds would be all over it? This was a good question and I think the bottom line answer is pretty clear--politics.

Because you can grow pot so easily that it would put the beer and liquor industry under in 2 years .Lets see hangover verses no hangover . What will people choose . It competes in a billion dollar per year industry .With hundreds of millions going to advertising that affects the print media who would lose revenues cause face it ads for pot would be silly and a waste of money when you can grow your own .Just think if you could plant a beer tree .Yank it up ,flip it over and drain 50 gallons of beer out of it .Thats the same as a small plant would provide in terms of buzz effect . Get over letting people save money and experience a mind altering experience that science has proven man needs and will search out regardless of the laws . Legal drugs just ain't enough for some people around 14% of the population regularly breaks the law And 30% break it once a month or so .So most of America is breaking a law that should not even exist unless you understand why .
The alcohol industry contributes over 100 million dollars a year specifically designed to keep pot illegal to political candidates.IT contributed 400 million to ad campaigns designed to keep people off drugs .It supports local law enforcement by contributing overall 1.6 billion in two years to the dare programs to keep kids off drugs providing cares and money to local police agency's . You do not have to change the mind of the people because most people would say go a head and smoke pot if you want .
The problem is getting a set of laws on the books that makes pot illegal to grow at home and this is impossible you can brew your own beer make wine but distilled spirits is the bread winner of them all .And these are the people spending billions to keep pot illegal just the same as making liquor is .No such thing as capitalism .Its all a lie .

Conservatives smoke pot too, Shiraz...

I agree. It should be legal. It would solve alot of problems - drug related crimes, jail overpopulation. HEY! If you didn't put all those pot dealers in jail, then maybe they could help raise their kids, fixing a whole other set of problems.

I think that if you choose to do drugs, then you should be held responsible for crimes that you commit while on said drugs - instead of the drug use being a crime. But the way things are now, if you commit a crime while under the influence, then you are an "addict" and it's not totally your fault, because you have a "disease". Make drugs legal, and hold people accountable for their decisions and actions.

Most people have smoked pot, but that doesn't mean that most keep doing it, or that it is a good idea for it to be legal. Believe it or not, it is a "temptation" that many people resist because we just don't LIKE it. Think about it- there is no real reason to fight for legalization of a recreational drug. It is not something necessary to life, liberty, or happiness.

sorry, its not 100% legal in the Netherlands - its 100% illegal - but carries a maximum penalty of 2 year - and Ducth police do not pursue crimes with max penalties of 2 years or less. So its illegal, but also allowed.

People are going to smoke it even if it's illegal. I think it would be good if it could be controlled and taxed. By controlled I mean regulate all of the growers and get rid of the dealers on the corners.

Lots of things are legal over seas that are not legal here. OUR government says it's dangerous, gateway to other drugs, etc. On and on about the health hazards of smoking it.(NOW they are on us about regular cigarettes too) I think it is because they haven't figured out a way to get a "Cut" of the profits .If they legalized it now to obtain a profit somehow from it after all the yrs. of hype, how would that look to the American public.?

It causes and promotes death, and brings too many people into submission.
Drug abuse is short of suicide and not a freedom.

Smokers cannot restore all damage so where is there right? Without taking full responsibility, where is the justice?

To support life, people are influenced by the actions of others and must take responsibility and be a good example in society.

To support death, people must do what they want, when they want and take no responsibility.

Should our laws support the one or the other? Freedom or death?
