I don't know where the term "King of the jungle"
originated, but it is currently a misnomer. Lions
live primarily on the grasslands of Africa, because
that is where potential food is most abundant.
There are lions in India, too, though not very many
are left. I don't know whether these are also mostly grassland animals or not. Part of the
problem is that the meaning of the word jungle
has changed over time, as many words have. It
originally meant an area of desert or wasteland,
and acquired the meaning of dense tangled
vegetation later.
The lion was at one time one of the most widely
distributed land animals in the world. It occurred
almost all over the Old World, except Australia,
and probably in North America, too, though it was
given a different scientific name there, based on
fossils, as they had all died out by the time humans
came on the scene. I don't know whether it
entered South America when the Central American
land connection appeared, but it has not been
there in historical times.

All lions live in the Africa and India. Just look up lions in Yahoo Images and you will see what it looks like. It is a dry flat land with lots of dead weeds and grass. The "king of the jungle" term just to refers to when Discovery channel was not invented yet and we just referred to all wild animals to living in the jungle. It just has a better ring to it then dry flat land.

Game farms in South Africa and Botswana, and I am sure there are some outside the official game farms, which are large areas where the animals are protected, but you can visit in a vehicle. Surprisingly the animals don't seem to be living in a jungle area but sparse areas with low shrubs. It makes one wonder where Tarzan actually lived, since I am yet to see jungle areas except in a few rain forests, and it doesn't rain in Tarzan movies.

You are/have been misinformed. The jungle -as well as the Savannah and other places- is where the lion lives. Hear these "ancient" words:
"In the jungle, the mighty jungle,
The lion sleeps tonight..."
These words are true.
Peace!
