I have a 12 year old daughter, a six year old daughter and two year old twins. The older two obviously love their xbox 360, as well as computer games and television. In our house, homework and chores have to be done first, and they can "earn" tv and gaming priveledges by bringing home good daily reports and A's on homework. If they have uncompleted homework or they have behavior issues, the tv/computer/xbox rights are the first things to be taken away. I usually allow an hour or so of games; but I try to include some educational type games, which they are allowed to play longer. They have their favorite tv shows which they are also allowed to watch, about an hour each night. So I would agree that two hours combined, as long as they earn it, is appropriate. It is amazing, when they know that their favorite hobby might be taken away, how well homework and chores are done. They also behave better, too, knowing that if they don't, they won't be allowed to play.

In my opinion, if he's done everything else he's supposed to do (homework, chores, etc.) then he should be allowed to do whatever he wants.
If you feel a desperate need to get him away from those screens, consider going somewhere outside the home together: out for ice cream, shopping, mini golf, etc. If you pick something he'll enjoy, it'll be an excellent bonding experience also.

I think the general rule that I have heard is 2 hours of TV per day max. Video games are just as bad as TV, so I would say 2 hours of mind numbing activity per day, whether it is TV or Video Games.
