I belong to a corporate gym - not a franchise, and I'm told that whenever I have a complaint, I'm told to take it to corporate. When I do that, they say to take it to my local gym management. I am now friends with the managers, and yet, still nothing gets done. The fact that some equipment is unsafe, there are sanitary problems, and classes are lackluster, makes me want to simply leave and join another gym. How does one make an example of this gym and get some change going?

First off, since you have complained to the management and owners, you should contact the health department and the Better Business Bureau. The health department will probally be your best bet because it is unsanitary, then they can take care of that. if the equipment is unsafe, then the BBB can help out. Has anyone been hurt there? because if so, maybe you can get a group of concerned people together. There is power in numbers.

Try putting down your complain on paper and address it to your mismanagers and have them sign a copy of that complaint as a form of acknowledgement receipt. If possible ask from them a written reply.
After sometime, if you don't see any improvement in your gym then submit a photcopy of the original complaint to the corporate Pontius Pilate manager.
Meanwhile go to another gym for your safety, and bring with you your corporate close friends.

First you should report the gym to the department of health and hygiene. Next you should quit and find another gym thats more sanitary to workout in.

Write a letter to their CEO describing your experience, but also offer suggestions on how to make it better. They will be turned onto that and likely fix the problems within a few weeks.

Local health inspectors, and your state OHSA or safety inspection organization. They have the power to get the corporates attention.
