I need to make sure it is because I want to use it in a college essay, but according Microsoft word, it is not. Does that mean that it is slang? Is it okay for me to use it in an essay for admissions? If it is, can you include a reliable source so that I can have a piece of mind? Thanks!

I can't imagine what kind of an essay for a college admissions you would want to use "shopaholic" in (as a high school teacher I cringe at the idea), but it probably falls under the definition of slang and it is not found at dictionary.com as a word http://www.brainydictionary.com/

Good Luck!!!

Yes, it's a real word. Checked it in the dictionary. I can also give you a similar word: SHOPPER. But, shopaholic is a word for sure. I've read it in an essay, something of this sort:

"Shopaholics can never resist a bargain".

Shopaholic is a neologism or slang term for a person who is a compulsive shopper. This person derives their pleasure in shopping and purchasing items.

It can refer to:
