First of all, forget everything you "learned" from Law and Order, CSI, or whatever. While much of the science is good, the shows as a whole aren't realistic. There's a very big difference between the staged forensics done on those shows (that always neatly tie up after half an hour) and real life forensics.
What you want to do is plan the crime such that you would have no motive (no obvious motive) to commit it. If you're the beneficiary of the victim's life insurance plan, you're in trouble. You also want to plan the crime such that it would appear that you couldn't have done it (you were out of the country, you don't own a gun, etc). And you want to plan the crime such that there's an obvious suspect (that isn't you) that has motive and opportunity, and make sure there's evidence pointing to them.
The reality is that the police are overworked. If there's an "obvious" suspect, and if there is strong evidence pointing towards their guilt, they'll prosecute.
Lastly, get a good lawyer.

They say there is NO perfect crime, but yet there are unsolved cases from over 50 yrs. ago. I would take tips from ALL the cop shows and CSI type shows I can find on how to cover myself.
I also would not reveal if I HAD a perfect crime figured out. If you do that you may as well confess to the crime.

All I can say is thats its getting harder and harder, compared to commiting a crime like 30-40 years ago. With all the technology and resourses out there, its can be difficult, but not impossible.???

When you can't find a parking space, park it on the police parking lot. I'm telling you, they never check their own parking lot ^_^
