In my opinion, one has to first and foremost be able to love oneself. And by love, I don't mean indulging. Secondly, through loving oneself, one will eventually be able to relate oneself to others which then creates the sense of compassion for others. Happiness doesn't mean that one will never feel sad or disappointed in the events of life, but that in all the adversity of life that one can still have a sense of stability, love, and care. Happiness doesn't means that one has to completely giving up hope and search. Hoping and searching is fine as long as one doesn't get attach to the hope and the search itself.

There is a fleeting state of being called "self-actualization" that I equate with happiness. As I said it is fleeting. When you have found it and know that you can find it again if you work at it then you can be happy. For me happiness is "knowing" what I "need" and having faith that I can find a way to get it.
