brushing your teeth with baking soda or salt can do the trick, but only after a while and if you do it on a regular basis (like daily). also, you can prevent your teeth turning to brown or gray by following a few simple rules:
1. change your toothbrush as often as you can
2. use mostly whitening effect tooth paste
3. always try to wash your teeth immediately after you've finished smoking, or drinking your coffee or coke... the more you allow these substances to linger on your teeth, the more difficult it will be for you to remove the stains they produce
4. test the level of calcium in your body and take calcium supplements if you need to get it to the right level
5. eat apples or pears, as well as raw vegetables such as carrots as often as you can
6. try to stay in good health. the general state of health influences the aspect of your hair, skin, nails and teeth... so when you stay healthy, you look healthy.
7. stay away as much as you can from chips... they're more dangerous to the teeth than chocolate and candies... and they leave ugly stains.
well... that's just about it. i hope it helps :)

Generally, clean human teeth become brown as we age. The colour is not in the tooth enamel (outside cover to tooth) but in the tooth dentine (inside material of tooth). When a dentist bleaches your teeth, he is aiming to bleach the dentine.
Teeth whiteners are a bit of a con as they only clean the enamel which can also be done with regular brushing with normal toothpaste.
I suggest you just go to the dentist for a thorough clean.
