Because the avatar program rather idealizes the various features you can choose. So you end up looking somewhat like yourself, but better.
Try it: make an avatar for yourself, trying to be as accurate a portrayal as you can. Now hold an actual photo of yourself up to the monitor right next to the avatar and compare. Don't you think the avatar is a little better looking? If not, why not use your own actual photo as your avatar?

You have an avatar right? Chances are that it looks like you. Forgive me if I'm wrong. But if I'm right, why? What was the reason you made your avatar look like you? Because you wanted a likeness of yourself as a cartoon or something like that, right? People have different reasons, but mostly its because its fun.

I don't have an avatar, therefore I didn't "love" making one, which proves that not everyone "loves" making avatars.
