They change upon my relationship with the person. For example, if it is my husband i am talking to, my tone is usually sweet, undestanding and soft. I is my girlfriends then I am usually funny, outgoing, and light. It was theorist Erving Goffman that stated that we have many "selves". All different types of personalites, that different people get to see.

Your tone should be dictated by the nature of the communication and to whom you are writing it to.

If it's a business or school communication, it should be formal and carefully structured so that your meaning will be very clear and there will be no places where your words could have double meanings.

To family and friends you also need to be careful, but in a different way. Here you need to be sure that the spirit of what you are saying is understood. As stupid as the smiley faces and terms like 'lol' are, they do serve a purpose.

Hope this helps...
