You want to do several things from the tools menu:
1. under uploads/slots change "uploads per person to zero"
2. under sharing/shared folders, make sure no folders are listed
3. under uploads/uploads bandwidth, move the slider all the way to the left
4. under "speed" check the box that says: "disable ultrapeer capabiliies"
5. When you have finished your downloading, always click on file/disconnect, so you don't leave in running in the system tray.

I am not sure if you can do that on limewire, I have never tried. But to tell you the truth, unless you are downloading 100's of songs a day, then you should be fine. Also as long as you are not uploading and sharing songs then you should be fine.

By uploading I mean ripping them off copywriitten cds.

When you open your Limewire Application, click on the Tools. Click Options then empty the text box under the Shared folder. That's it.
