1.first check all the stuff that you don't really help you and delete them. always do "scan disk" and "defragmentation" as often.
2.check the start up process by typing "msconfig" at the "Run" when you click the "start" button, unchecked the unwanted start up files there.
3.try some software that can boost your system.
4.but the real guts here is by upgrading your system. try adding some extra memory on your "RAM", "SATA" hardisk is also a count. The new "Dual Core" will help a lot, because of it's 3.4GHz speed.

There might be different cases which may cause to slow down you computer.....
Many of them includes the hidden viruses or spys....
Other factors may include your processor, RAM and Hard disk performance also....which u didnt mention in ur question
I would recemond, first you should keep your system to low-sources utilizing, if you are using windows xp, right clik on my computer , goto properties > click on advanced tab > click on settings under heading "performance" > and then choose option "adjust for the best performance"
Doing this will sure 40% solve ur problem.
Also, press CTRL + ALT + DEL and run task manager, under process tab, see which program is eating up your Memory and you can guess to end task it....
Also, goto Documents and Settings folder in ur C: drive and goto your current folder, and then, in temp folder, delete all files.....
Another, good suggestion will be to re install windows,
and you should norton ghost,
by using norton ghost you will get ur windows installed in 5 minutes...fresh and new....
if u dont have it, mail me, i will sent it to u...
still having problm, just mail me,
Best Regards.

minimize the programs that come up when you boot the PC. This will give the machine less of a headache to start up. also, defragment once in a while and buy some Ram to maximize performance =)
