I'm not looking for what st. has the best amusement park or sports. My family will be in a position in the next two years to choose to plant long term roots or relocate. One of us will be a cert. elem. school teacher, the other a nationally registered paramedic / firefighter. We have two young children.
Currently, we live in N.Ga. The positive aspects of staying are:
low cost of housing,
free college tuition, freedom to own firearms and a
teacher and paramedic shortage - job security.
The negative aspects of living in Ga.:
high rate of urban sprawl and the traffic that goes with it,
reverse discrimination and racial tension,
high immigrant population, schools ranked low nationally and it's generally flat, boring and disinteresting (no mountains, 4 hours to an ocean, can't see the stars .... suburban hell).
We've considered the Pacific Northwest and Utah. What places can you recommend for reasonable housing, gov't job opportunity and quality of living? East or West ... where and why?

Eugene, Oregon!!
It's a wonderful area.
Great climate too ... a bit soggy in winter, but not as much as people make it out to be.

While the Pacific Borthwest is very pretty I don't think you would like it there. You sound somewhat conservative and that is a very liberal area. The Seattle area is also extremely congested.

We moved from California to Texas while our kids were still in school. Education wise they are so much better off than they were in California, the schools there are awful and I wouldn't consider putting any kid into a California school again. Property values are lower here as well and I don't see a lot of the other issues like racial tension here. There is probably some no matter where you go but it isn't bad here.

There aren't any mountains here either. The coast is a long ways away. But there are lots of parks and camping areas around and they are well maintained.

Honestly, if you are looking for a nice city that is a capital city and has great cost of living (6th cheapest in nation), move to Topeka, KS. I live here now and I have a 3 bedroom house for $425 a month. The crime is definitely not as bad as some of the other cities that I have lived in like OKC, OK, or Denver, CO, etc and not as expensive. And there is a lot of little towns close by and people are pretty friendly here.

I would recomend Amherst NY. It is a suburb of Buffalo and has been rated the safest town in america once or twice. They have a very good school system and the prices in this area arent that bad. You will be right by lake erie and downtown buffalo, there is always something to do. There is alot of awsome architecture in the area so you can teach you kids about it. Buffalo was voted the friendliest place in the country too. Its a good place to live!! Plus we got great food!!!

Minnesota. Its healthcare is the best in the nation, its schools are very good. And there's Valleyfair, Mall of America, and Lake Superior. And it's not as cold here as most people think.

wenatchee or east wenatchee washington state is awesome. there are a ton of schools and sports teams that your kids can play on. it is in a valley so there are a ton of gorgeous views. in the summer, wenatchee was the biggest real estate market in the states. houses are nice and electricity is insanely cheap b/c there is a dam in chelan( nearby town) i love it so much! it's not a large city, but it has everything you need. schools, shopping, churches, transportation, jobs...etc.
