There was a book by Rudyard Kipling called The Man Who Would Be King, made into a film in the 60's or 70's with Sean Connery and Micheal Cane (I think), would that be what you ate talking about?

"The Man Who Would Be King". Excellent film. Based on a book by Kipling. Just one small thing - it wasn't an Island. It was this remote place up in the mountains.

Don't know what the original story was, but the Disney adaptation is DEFINITELY "Road to Eldorado" with the voices of Kevin Kline and Keneth Branagh. Very funny movie, was on TV over Christmas. They get shipwrecked, and they arrive in this city of gold on horseback, and are thought to be gods. They then plot on how to get out of there with as much gold as possible...

Your other answerers are probably right - I haven't seen the film. But, tell you what - the plot is right out of the Bible! The apostle Paul & others were shipwrecked on Malta; Paul was bitten by a snake, and because he didn't die from the snakebite the people thought he was a god.
You see - nothing new under the sun! Not even film plots.....
