I'm 34 and started smoking at 14 through peer pressure.

If I were 14 and smoking now with the new law about to come in, I'd probably moan and complain about infringements on my human rights or something, after all, we thought we knew everything at 16 didn't we? Thought we were being 'hard' by smoking and ridiculed those who point blank refused to try it. I can't see that attitudes of minors would have changed that much in 18 years.
At 16 you feel invincible. Even if you know someone with cancer or other smoking related illnesses, it's never gonna happen to them is it?
By the time they get to loathing putting a cigarette in their mouths but simply cannot stop, or are hacking up all kinds of undesirable stuff and are wheezing like a squeaky bike wheel in need of a good oiling every day, it is too late. The damage has been done, and those 'squares or geeks' who never tried the cigarettes in the first place are like demi-gods for having the emotional strength to endure ridicule for their own health.
Hats off to them.
I damn well wish i'd have listened or been strong enough 18 years ago.

i started smoking at 12, my sister got me to smoke as she was elder, i look young for my age so now even at the age of 25 i get asked for i.d, i have noticed 16 year old girls look much older these days so i dont think there will be any problem in them getting served, they will get a ciggy from somewhere one way or another, from the pub vending machine, get a older friend/relative to get them. everything is fun if it's a challenge so i don't think there will be any change, i mean how many under 18's get served with alcohol? you only have to stand in a nightclub on a saturday night to see how many young adults (16 and 17 year olds) are in drinking.

I had a neighbour, who happens to have a 16 year-old daughter. They are quite poor, and their sons are hanging around neighbouring streets. The daughter dosen't listen to the news on the radio, nor does she watch it on t.v. and she dosent read the newspapers. I passed her one day, as i came to see my old town, and she was in total distress. She had gotten into the swing of smoking, and she was purely and utterly addicted. She gets through 25 packets of silk cut a day and sooner or later, they will up the age. She was overjoyed, when she was finally old enough to smoke, and then she realized that she would not be able to smoke anymore, because of the incoming age rise.

I Hope that helped to answer your question.

And Good Luck with giving up the Smoke. :D

i started smoking age 12, im 23 now and am finding it very hard to give up, i think its a brilliant idea, i dont think it will actually stop teens smoking but it will certainly make it more difficult for them to get hold of! i wish this law was there when i that age

I was 16 when i started and i though i was a late starter. I'm 32 now and still trying to give up. The only thing is you'll get all the wee kids coming up to older folk and saying "gonna buy me somes fags man?" (fags - uk term for cigarettes). slap them and tell them to fu@k off!
