Whenever I try to change whether or not the file is read-only, the computer says "Access is Denied." I use Windows XP, if that helps.

more than likely you are not the owner of the file. You will need to change ownership first.

This of course is assuming you're not trying to change properties on a file from a cd or dvd disc which if you are you can't do it.

In general you go to a directory that lists the file. Then right click on it and select PROPERTIES. Notice that there is a check mark there for read-only. Uncheck that and the file can be both read and written.

The exception is if the file is on a CD or DVD that can't be written by you. Then there is no way to change that fact by clicking on a property. That may be why you are getting "access-denied."

In windows, you have to have write access to the file to be allowed to change the file. You can access the file with the Administrator account, and either move it to your documents folder, or give yourself permission to rename that file. (become the owner). Most direct would be to have admin do it. Do not get in the habit of booting up in admin though, that's how all the little nasties get through.

Right click on the file, go to properties. Once you are in the properties take the check mark off of read only.
Hope this helps,
