Defragmentation helps your computer ALL the time, not just at startup. The best bet for you is to check how much disk space you have left, and to check all your hardware to make sure it works 100% well and has the latest drivers. Slow hardware can cause your computer to a crawl (the fastest a computer can work is as fast as its slowest part in a way).

Furthermore, check your networking settings, and of course, any antivirus software (Norton can add a good minute on a mid-range system at times).

Finally, check that you're not using external hard drives and other external drives or any CD/DVD startup applications, Windows XP is a nightmare when a new CD is inserted, it spins up the disc and sends messages to all programs a new disc is in, and this takes up vital time.

Finally, check your registry settings and virtual memory. There's a registry hack called DISABLE PAGING EXECUTIVE. This tells windows to use all available RAM before using the swap file (virtual memory) when running software. Normally, the information is available at:

Make sure you're comfortable with registry editing though.

I suppose there are 3 levels of making your machine run faster.
1) run disc clean up and disk defragment these can be found by clicking start/ all programs/ accessories/ system tools
run one at a time.
2) download free software such as adaware and spybot and run these programs regularly 3-4 times a week if you do a search on google they will be easily found
3) to make your computer run faster then try adding more RAM go to www.crucial.com and use the online scanner this will give you all the information you require to make sure you buy the correct RAM for your machine tho you may have to shell out at least £40 for a stick of RAM depending on size.

Try disk cleanup first. You may need to defrag the system and clear cache settings. Slow systems are usually caused by too many programs running at once or not enough RAM.
Hope this helps,
