(1) you need to understand that all matching carpet that will be continuous, such as meeting in doorways, must run the same direction.

(2) You want to avoid putting seams in high trafficway if possible.

(3) most carpet comes 12 ft wide, some are also available in 15 ft.

With that in mind, consider the individual pieces, which we call drops. A drop covers a room from one side to the other. If the room is wider than the drop, then you will have a fill or second drop, and thus a seam. The measurement should be wall to wall, plus about 3 inches for trim and out of square allowances. If there is a doorway in the drop perimeter, the measurement goes at least halfway through the doorway.

When you have added up your drops and figured out where your fills will come from (trim-outs or more roll stock) you have a roll length. If the needed length is 30 feet by 12 feet, you have 40 square yards- length times 1-1/3 for 12' goods, or length times 1-2/3 for 15' goods. If the product is priced by the square foot, length x width = square footage.

Seams are labor intensive and are undesirable overall. Minimize them; don't scrimp on material and make a patchwork quilt trying to save money.

Carpet comes in DYE LOTS. If you are short on material and can't get more from the same roll- it probably won't match.

Any installer or store that knows anything will insist on using their own measurements. If you are having someone else do it, require that they measure, so any errors are their responsibility.

If you have a builders print of the home take it with you as you shop for carpet. Any one at the carpet will be able to calculate the amount of carpet you need. Or just take approximate room measures to the tore they can do it

If you know the square footage, divide by 9 to get square yardage.

BTW: typically when purchasing carpet for anything other than one small room, you buy 20% more than needed to account for waste, etc.

YOU CAN GET AN EXACT YARDAGE, BUT CARPET COMES IN 12' ROLLS & YOUR ESTIMATE & THE CARPET COMPANIES WILL DIFFER BY SEVERAL SQ YDS! CARPET HAS A " GRAIN", YOU CAN'T CUT A PIECE, TURN IT & SEAM IT. IT WON'T MATCH. THERFORE THEY END UP USING MORE, MUCH MORE IF YOU HAVE LOTS IF ROOMS OVE 12' IN BOTH DIRECTIONS!

Add DredPir8Roberts plus commie i.e.
length in feet (rounded up to nearest foot)
times
width in feet
don't forget closets, hallways, etc
then add all of this together
and divide by 9
and add the 20%

Multiply length times width in feet ( this gives you square feet )
Divide by 9 to get square yards.

10x12 ft room = 120 sq feet.
120 sq ft. divided by 9 = 13.3 yds.

+ 10 percent
