HOUSTON (Reuters) - A 10-year-old U.S. boy who hanged himself may have been inspired to do it by television coverage of Saddam Hussein's execution, police said on Thursday.

Relatives told police in Webster, Texas, that Sergio Pelico had seen the video of the former Iraqi leader's hanging and asked about it before the incident on Sunday.

KOLKATA: A 15-year-old girl from Kharda district hanged herself in response to the execution of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein on Thursday.

"She said they had hanged a patriot. We didn't take her seriously when she told us that she wanted to feel the pain Saddam did during the execution," the girl's father, Manmohan Karmakar, said.

Why has his hanging developed such a morbid interest?

What is your opinion of these new developments?

The problem with young children is that they are at that target age where they are easily influenced and moved by things. The y assume that the attention that Saddam received can be mimicked and show some kind of patriotism.
Sadly this kind of thing happens all the time, I did a case study and I hope I'm not wrong but I believe it was in Malaysia, a boy commited suicide and wrote a letter to his girlfriend saying he loved her so much and could not bear it. All the high school children thought it was so romantic, and what followed after was the worst case of copy cat suicides. The government had to intervene the number of suicides was staggering.
**If I'm wrong I'm sorry about the country, and someone knows the proper name please correct me thanx..

Without knowing those people, it's impossible to say how much the hanging of Saddam had an effect. I'd have to imagine they had some pretty serious problems and that a lot of things could have pushed them over the edge.

But the second story shows that you have to take it seriously when young people talk about doing harm to themselves.

Tragic, of course, but it's really no different than kids mimicking things they see on TV all the time. Until society takes responsibility for the images it demands, we will have children taking guns to school to shoot their friends and hanging themselves or whatever else it may be.

It just goes to show that no matter how much parents like to think their children are "mature" they are still children and need lots and lots of supervision and parent interaction.

This is just another example of how violence spreads and of how our society's inexplicable love of morbid and disgusting things leads to more terrible things.

There are better ways to commit suicide, but rope is cheap and easily accessible. If that's their tool of choice then so be it.

Perhaps this is a reason we shouldn't use the death penalty to punish others.
