Why do some animals have very elaborate courtship behaviors whereas others do not?

they evolved that way because it was advantageous.

mice and other small rodents dont go through elaborate courtship rituals because their system of survival is "power in numbers"...not the quality of the offspring.

for those species with elaborate courtship rituals, it can either be a test to determine fitness or used to trigger a sexual response
