I've read so many questions when ppl refer to the extreme pain caused during labor and I know the pain medications given during labor, but I am wondering how extreme the pain is after the birth of the baby (especially if you need stitches and whatnot). Also, do they give you any additional pain medications for that pain? Thanks!

I have 2 children of my own. I had both of them completely natural and it was the best experience of my life. You body naturally produces hormones during birth. Afterward you feel as though you can run a marathon. Also when you give birth naturally and learn to work with your body not against it you have a much lower chance of getting stitches. I did not find the birth of my children to be painful. The contraction leading up to their birth were quit intense but if you learn hypno-birthing techniques they are easy to withstand. If you're thinking that you could never do this I know better. For I am 5' 2" and weigh 90 lbs. If I can do it you and any other woman can.

The pain after a vaginal delivery is not that bad, even with stitches. They give you a numbing spray for the stitches and you might get some tylenol 3 in the hospital but you are pretty much just supposed to use over the counter pain relievers then.

Unless of course you have a drug-happy doctor.. some are willing to provide vikoden for weeks after a vaginal delivery but this is NOT the norm.

I didn't feel pain after. Maybe after the birth, the rest just didn't register enough. I had stiches; they didn't hurt but it felt odd when they put them in. No pain, but things getting tugged and such in an area where you don't usually feel that kind of thing. My nurse said they would give me something if I did feel any pain. I had the choice between ibuprofen or something stronger. As he said,"now's not the time to play hero." I can't remember what the other something was, but I think it may have been prescription.

I'm only adding a comment because no one else mentioned c sections. I had two of them, and was given prescription pain killers (Tylenol 3). I used them for about 3 days while the incision was healing. After a few days you really shouldn't have any pain that is intolerable...it's just uncomfortable, and even then it doesn't last long. If you find yourself facing a c-section, it's not that bad. My doctor told me to get up and moving right away. Even though it hurts, it really does speed up your healing.

They will numb you to give you stitches.. I had to have this done once. They will give you some pain relivers for cramps or what not. The only thing I had a problem with post partum (and being totally honest) was going to the bathroom (wee). They wouldnt take my IV out til i went to the bathroom. Ooh it hurt so bad.. but this AWSOME nurse cames in.. gives me this little bottle.. had a little opening in the top of it. She told me to fill it up with warm water.. and run the warm water over while i went pee. OH did this help!!! I used this method with ALL my kids.. and no matter were i went i took this bottle with me! Sadly after that kid none of the others told me so im glad i knew.. cuz i dunno HOW i woulda done it without it!

They give you pain pills during pregnancy but they could harm the baby. I am pretty certain they give pain pills after pregnancy but after the pain of pregnancy you might not feel the pain of stitches or anything less than the pain that you experience during pregnancy.

What they can give you will depend on whether or not you are breastfeeding.
Generally they give something like and advil or tylenol, but there isn't that much pain after the birth. The pain is during.

Yes, if you want or need medications for pain afterwards you can get them. I never took anything stronger than Tylenol or Aleve postpartum. (Both of those are safe to take while nursing too.)

If you have stitches or your bottom is sore, a GREAT thing to do is to take the big size of maxi pads, squirt a bunch of witch hazel into them and freeze them. The cold feels great on your sore bottom and the witch hazel helps with healing.

Yeah...they give pain medication after birth! Usually, they give you prescription strength Ibuprofen and a strong pain killer like Vicaten! Pain after labor is very common! Your muscles will be very sore and you private area will be sore too!!!

Depending on how difficult your labor is will depend on the amount of discomfort you feel after. You have bad cramps afterwards in your stomach from your uterus contracting but the medication will also depend on whether you are breastfeeding the baby. THis makes the uterus contract down faster which gets you skinny faster. There will be other discomforts but you will get through it!
