The slaughter of the horses sucks, but horses have a huge impact on the environment. There are places where horses are killing off endangered fish by destroying streams, and other places where they are wiping out the vegetation and causing huge impacts on threatened reptile species. There is no easy answer - there is not enough people to adopt the horses. Groups promoting horse adoption are very important to prevent killing horses and to reduce environmental impacts.
