The preference is based on an artifical comparison since to be stupid would also include some knowledge of that comparative stupidity and hence any associated happiness would be tempered by that knowledge.
On the other hand a miserable genius could not, most probably, remain miserable "all" the time. After all, depression does tend to be time limited. Hence, in the miserable genius there the potential and probability that no matter how miserable, whether naturally or SSRIs (supplemental seratonin reuptake inhibitors). I'll choose that miserable genius any day!

Happy and stupid ... genius isn't everything! I have met many geniuses who may be geniuses in their fields, but when it comes to anything outside of their field - they are kind of stupid. The ones I know miss out on the simple joys of life. They are so full of themselves that they have tossed compassion and wisdom out the window. They live the "its all about me" mentality and the "I know everything" mentality - its hard to be friends with people like that. Knowledge and genius are one thing, as for me, I would rather have godly wisdom and a zeal for life, to live life fully, for myself and others and enjoy it! Lucky for me is that I am very happy, and although not genius, I am certainly not stupid ... I'm not sure that there is anyone who can really be labeled "stupid." I think everyone has an area of genius - even if their genius is of a creative nature and not necessarily book knowledge.

How about Happy and Genius? :)
Not all of us are born geniuses, but we're none of us are born stupid either. We are ALL intelligent, the hard part is figuring out where it lies and how to use it and believing that you can use it to your full potential. As far as being happy goes, that depends on the choices you make throughout your life, such as the people you have in it, the person you are and if you do things you enjoy. In a way, we have to work at being happy, only we can know what makes us happy, but we just have to find the motivation to go out there and find it...and it IS possible... :)

I used to think I would rather be happy and stupid. But here's the thing, if you are smart, you can think of ways to make yourself happier. If you are blissfully ignorant and something truly terrible happens, you will not be able to come up with solutions to your problem and will wind up stupid and miserable. At least with brains you stand a chance at improving your lot. Also, the smart person can help other people become happier by helping them improve their situation. So, I think that in the long run it is better to be smart and fight your misery.

I would choose "happy but stupid". remember the saying, "ignorance is bliss". happy people live longer, and there are a lot of things in life that you do not need to be a genius to experience. since you live longer, you probably would eventually learn a lot of things, and end up not stupid anymore!

Some philosopher has said that happiness is the chief food. I believe in that and would say that for me it would be better to be stupid and happy. Wait a minute I'm already happy but stupid already!

I don't think anyone will choose either of those choices willingly, rationally. Everyone of course wants to be happy and genious. But once one of the choices comes to their life in real, like it or not they got to deal with it, with the reality. The point is that how they deal with unwanted situation. Any kind of unwanted situations, not only happy but stupid or miserable but genious.
