Below is an answer I submitted to the question "Is time travel possible"? In addition to this, Time, Size, and Mass will all seem normal for those in their own reference frame. These entities would seem peculiar, for example, if earthlings could somehow see the people traveling close to the speed of light. The Earthlings would see the travelers shrink, become more massive, and notice that their clocks were running significantly slower. The foollowing is a a brief descrition of time , the 4th dimension. I hope this helps.

Yes, one aspect of time travel is theoretically possible. That is to say, according to Einstein's Special theory of relativity it is possible to travel into the future. How far in the future in a given time span depends how close to the speed of light you accelerate. Traveling at 80% of the speed of light according to Einstein's formula y=1/ Sqrt 1-v^2/c^2 ,(v=velocity, c= speed of light) the clocks on Earth will advance 1.667 times faster than the one traveling in space. Therefore, after a twenty year journey by the space travelers, (20 yrs time has elapsed by the travelers account) upon their return, there will have passed on earth 33.4 years.
At 98% of the speed of light, 20 years of travel at this speed, upon return, 100.4 years will have passed on earth.
This is the equivalent to traveling into the future, which is a form of time travel. Therefore time travel is theoretically possible. In fact, check out this site as the guy proclaims that we will be able to approach speed of light travel within 100 yrs.

Traveling back in time is debatable, as you would have to be able to exceed the speed of light to do that.
Plug in the numbers to this formula. speed of light c= 186,000 miles per second. For velocity, just multiply this number from .01 to .9999. Then just follow mathematical operations.
good luck

Yes, but if you alter time then you have changed reality. Here are two interesting books that you should check out are that deal with if you chose to change history. "The Man Who Folded Himself" by David Gerrold and "Replay" by Ken Grimwood. Each display what impacts can happen if you choose to change history. While Gerrold has device for the time traveler, and he explores a sort of ways. Grimwood has his time traveler go in a personal time loop that shorten everytime he goes back into time.

Time travel actually already happens to a certain extent, if you know that time "slows down" the faster you are moving. It is a known fact that astronauts orbiting the earth are aging slightly more slowly than us on the surface of the earth because of the rapid speed at which they are orbiting. The difference in time is not yet observable to the naked eye, however.

The physics trilogy: E = mc2, m = E/c2, and c2 = E/m, states that time travel is impossible because all that exists is present time "c2". There is no manner by which mankind may escape time because that is what he is physically composed of, and physical time flows into becoming the past at the speed of light, so mankind is unable to manipulate it in any manner during "present time". Everything that physically happened in the past is part of "present time", it's just changed form. Everything that shall happen in the future shall be composed of present time, it just hasn't been put together yet.

Newton hypothesized about "time travel" in relation to a ship traveling at light speed. It has to do with relativity and other scientific principles. However, there will never be a "machine" that can take us "back in time". Sorry, that is purely science fiction.

Theorectically, I think it IS possible, as time can somewhat be perceived as "ripples", similar to what happens when a drop of water (or a pebble) falls into a pool of water.

Problem is discovering how to reverse the "ripple" effect and go against the tide, so to speak.

I have doubts about going FORWARD in time though...How can you go to a place and time that hasn't occured yet?

Atlantis Noa,

To respond to your e-mail....if we were to travel backward in time to say, 1950, YES...we would be the "beings from the future" to people in the 50's.

Travelling forward in time seems almost ludicrous to me, since the future hasn't occured yet.

I can see travelling to different dimensions, as a more plausible thing versus going forward in time.

well don't think I'm crazy but in a way yes, because if you think about it we always are "traveling" through time we are just traveling at the same time

my physics proffesor said it is possible, the mathematics of it is all already there, like light and sound, time is also a wave, however, physically going back in time hasnt ever been acheived yet...lets give it another 100 years or so and see wht happens

Back in 2039 I used to answer "yes, we all move forward in time". But now in 2007 I'm not so sure anymore.

I bought a second hand time machine but it broke down next Wednesday and now I am stuck in the future. Could you tape the NBA game for me?
