No itunes huh? well then i would forget being able to play songs on your nano. You see Apple created a special connection between the ipod and itunes. ipod can only play songs from itunes, and itunes can only give its songs(and other stuff) to the ipod.
However just because you download itunes, doesn't mean you have to use the itunes store. you can just use itunes to keep all of your burned CDs or the stuff from limewire. then those songs then will transfer seamlessly over to itunes.
And concerning limewire, just to warn you, some of those things you will mostlikealy get from there, some contain viruses and other things taht are harmful to your computer, just giving you a heads up. And downloading itunes simply so you can put songs from other places onto it isn't so bad.
oh last thing...itunes.. it is FREE!!! not a penny down!

You need iTunes in order to transfer songs from your computer to your iPod Nano. I ran into the same problem and was hesitant to download iTunes. However, iTunes is a free download, and it does not require you to download songs in order to have it on your computer. To transfer the files from LimeWire to your iPod Nano, save the files to a folder on your hard drive. Then, open iTunes. In the toolbar, under "File", you can add one file or an entire folder to your library. Choose the file in which your music is stored and upload! Once you've updated your iTunes Music Library, connect your iPod Nano. The connection should appear in the left toolbar of iTunes. Drag and drop songs and playlists from your library onto the toolbar icon for your Nano. Hope this helps!
