So many American and European tourists have asked me if lions walk around in my town (in South Africa). And sometimes people are shocked when they hear Africa has over 50 different countries.
Why so???

I had to smile when I read your question. I live in Texas. People always think we all ride horses and wear big cowboy hats and boots and rope cattle. Many city children have never seen a cow. So, Nothing could be further from the truth.... but for some reason, that is what people from other states and countries believe. As for Africa, I belive that most people associate it with savannahs and plains because that is what they see on TV.

I don't know what to think about southern Africa. All they talk about on the news is the epidemics out there, and they're always showing pictures of dirty children in t-shirts in an impoverished setting. However, when you see things on the Discovery channel, they're running around with well-dressed educated people in vehicles with some nice farming areas and homes and everything. There's not enough coverage of the area for me to be able to form any sort of real opinion. I've seen either end of things, probably both extremes. Not the average.

It depends on who you talk to. If you talk to an educated American they know that Africa has a lot of countries with big cities and such. If you talk to an uneducated American odds are he/she thinks it is one big country with lions all around.
However, don't bash Americans yet, if you were to talk to an uneducated South Africa odds are he/she would think that America is the land of gold and prosperity that if you simply show up there they will put you in a grand home with servants and you get to have dinner with Tom Cruise and never have to work a day in your life.

The movie industry makes idols out of people! People believe what they see on television. "Tarzan of the apes", in the wild, where there are lions, tigers and alligators.

Do South Africans really think that a city like New York is like you see in movies like 'Death Wish'?
