My elderly mother has taken sleeping pills for at least 30 years . She sometimes wakes in the middle of the night and takes another . She swears that she also needs a glass of wine or a tot of whiskey before bed . Over the xmas break she had nights when she says she didn't sleep at all . I cant tell her what to do ,only advise her .

No, it's not a great idea. Neither is it a good idea to tell an elderly lady what to do - she's been around a long time and probably knows her own habits and body as well as anyone could.

I'd leave her be.

No, unfortunately it is GOOD to mix sleeping tablets with alcohol. I did it for years after my divorce. But you are playing with fire because sooner or later, your health will suffer... -that's if you don't drown in your own vomit first.

Alcohol does not help you to sleep. All that happens is that by approximately 03:17 am, your body has metabolised all the alcohol and it wakens you up because it wants MORE.

Usually people who say they haven't slept a wink have, in fact been in a very light sleep.

If your mother is elderly it's unlikely that she will ever change her habits now. But she shouldn't mix alcohol with sleeping tablets, it's a recipe for disaster.

A lot of sleeping tablets are rendered ineffective if taken with alcohol which is known to cause distruption to sleep patterns even in people that normally sleep well so no, it's probably not helping her. The product information on her tablets should help you decide how damaging the alcohol is likely to be.

I can't be more specific sorry but I know someone (and it's NOT me) and they are on antidepressants, anti anxiety meds and they would drink about that much each night. At 43 years he is OK but he is lethargic and his alcoholic liver enzymes are in the 300s when they should be much much lower. He gets gastric reflux and cold feet and doesn't sleep well.

Most definitely it is DANGEROUS to mix alcohol with sleeping pills, i think common sense would have told you that. Especially large amounts of alcohol and taking sleeping pills for 30 years isn't healthy either.

not a good thing to mix...can cause black-outs and memory loss...my thought is that your mom shouldn't be on the samemed for that long - there are new meds that she can try that might be more helpful...and a doctor should be monitoring her (they're adictive...)...if her body is taking them and still not sleeping then she needs something else...as well...she might need to look into a dependancy (addiction)she has formed with alcohol opr sleeping pills!

Most definitely, you are likely to to go to sleep one night and NOT wake up in the morning. This is how dangerous it can be. You can confirm this with a doctor.
