He was picked up by the Doctor in a London Blitz sequence during the episode where people were growing gas masks on their faces. The Billie Piper's character fancied him (what a mistake to make!) Can't remember the title of it.

Captain Jack first appears in episode 9 The Empty Child of the first series with Chris Eccleston. It takes place during the blitz where Jack is running a con that goes wrong, and he, Rose, and the Doctor work to rectify the damage. He was in the next four episodes culminating in his death and subsequent resurrection by Rose in the final episode of the first season called The Parting of the Ways.

This is also the back story of his character in Torchwood: how once he died, was brought back to life, and now seems to be immortal. Captain Jack repeatedly tells Gwen that someday he'll find the 'right sort of Doctor' to explain it. It also gave us the clff hanging end of the first season of Torchwood and opened the door for a crossover of the two series. Here's hoping it won't take long for us all to find out what happens!

He first appears in the 'Empty Child' episode (episode preceeding 'The Doctor Dances'). That was the one with the kid walking around with the gas mask face, looking for his mummy.

He first appears when Rose is accidently swept up by a barrage balloon. She has been trying to catch up with the kid looking for his mummy but looses him. Hanging above the London skyline by a rope, she finds herself in a bit of a pickle. He spots her and catches her with a laser beam when she lets go of the rope. He takes her onto his ship which is disguised.
