When my daughter was 5 she came home and asked me what sex was. I was stunned but tried to be helpful by telling her that when a man and woman gets married it's how they ask God to give them children and a little bit more vague explanation. She looked at me like I was crazy so I asked if that answered her question. She said no, that in school that day the teacher had them fill out a paper and under sex she told the girls to put f and the boys to m and she didn't understand why or what that was. So I then explained that 'sex' was if you were a boy or a girl. It make me feel silly for answering the first time without asking why. So I say ask why and then give as basic information as you can. This would also depend on the age of the child.

It depends on the age of the child . Younger kids don't need long involved answers that they can't understand emotionally . Keep it short and sweet , asking along the way if that is what they wanted to know .
