Well, there's this one:

Say, "Don't take the dishes out of the kitchen in view of the fact that you leave them everywhere when you do."

Or

You could tell them to use paper towels for bringing any snacks out of the kitchen, and if it requires more than a paper towel (or a few coffee filters) it should be eaten in the kitchen or dining room.

You could buy cheapy little paper plates and cups.

Still, it just seems to me that saying, "We're going to have a new rule about eating anywhere other than the kitchen/dining room because we're going to get ants with what's going on now" ought to work.

They should be thoughtful enough and civilized enough that if you take a "team-leader" approach and just announce the new rules they'd just go with it. If you can't get that much from them you have bigger problems (no insult intended, but if they won't cooperate for the most part it would be a sign that they're more out of control that is healthy for a family).

There is one other idea: Give them each a set of their own flatware, a plate, and a cup. Tell them they are to take care of them and use them for their snacks. This would leave your "real dishes" in the kitchen. You could use the "real" dishes for meals as always. The kids would just have their own snack dishes. This wouldn't solve the problem of the dirty plate in the bedroom, though, but maybe a few times of having to scrape last night's snack off a plate before using it would help with this issue.

This is a common problem in today's hustle-bustle world. You could purcahse disposable cups and leave containers in handy places that yrge others to dispose of them. You can also ask, always politely, never demand, that they take their cups to the kitchen sink. Tell the teenagers where you want them to put the cups, not just don't leave the cups out.
I once called a house meeting and told everyone we were going to have a little in-service training. Then I showed the whole family how and where they should take various things like cups, plates etc.

first off, do not use any rewards or anything that involves money, you'd be opening a Pandora's box for the future!

Place garbage cans in nearly every room of the house, they can be nice so that if the plates are disposable they can just throw them out as they eat.

take privileges away if they don't help out such as not giving them rides, or allowing people over until they respect the house!

do not pick up after them because if they know that you'll pick up after them...why would they possibly start doing it themselves?

Even if it annoys you for a few days do not pick up after them! when they start seeing that their house isn't as nice as it used to be and they realize they do not enjoy being surrounded by mess and are embarrassed by the mess to their friends they'll start cleaning up.

I'm a sixteen year old girl who is an entire mess and have three brothers that are the same way so, I'm talking from their point of view...

Good luck =)

My kids don't need convincing, tho they often need reminding. "Hey, your cups" is a good thing to shout out if they're in an area where they've left dirty stuff.

Otherwise, just have one or two 'dirty dishes' runs a day where everyone must go through the house and gather their stuff.

Lastly, tie the proper disposal of plates/food/cups to privileges. "You can play the computer after your old food stuffs are picked up."

have a fine, 5 bucks for every cup, plate, or food found around the house by them. That should get em to stop pretty quick.

When I eat in front of the TV, my mom makes me bring the dishes in right after I eat, before I do anything else. If I don't, I can't eat out of the kitchen or dining room for a week.

Assign them their own cup and plate, and make sure you know whose is whose. That way, if they leave them out, they have nothgin to eat on! Also it might invoke them to wash their plate and cup better because they know who is going to eat off ti next!
