Translation, in geometry, is understood as the movement of an object (e.g., a point, a triangle) in a metric space (a space with coordinates where distance can be measured).

A translation of (2, -1) means that all points of the object are moved from (x,y) to (x+2, y-1). For example, if one apex of a triangle is located at (5,5) then the apex is moved to (7, 4).

On a plane (2-D Euclidean space), translation does not change an object's shape, size or orientation.

On a graph where 0 is the center with positive being up and to the right and negative down and to the left it would be two to the right and down 1.
